Working and volunteering with Assistance Dogs

AADSA doesn’t train or provide assistance dogs so we’re not able to offer volunteering opportunities, student placements, work experience or job opportunities. But many of our member organisations do offer these and you can find more information in this section.

Working with Assistance Dogs

In South Africa (RSA), there is no single defined route to becoming an assistance dog trainer, nor are there specific qualifications required for the role. The path to entering this field can vary depending on the organization, individual expertise, and experience.

The role of an assistance dog trainer is highly diverse and extends beyond working directly with dogs. Trainers may also engage with recipients of assistance dogs, members of the public, staff, and volunteers. This makes it essential for aspiring trainers to develop a strong foundation in positive reinforcement training techniques and gain hands-on experience in various areas related to dog training, behavior, and welfare. Volunteering or working in environments where assistance dogs are trained can be an invaluable way to build the necessary skills and knowledge.

At AADSA, we do not keep or train assistance dogs ourselves. Instead, our role is to support our member organizations, each of which operates independently with its own staff recruitment, training procedures, and internal processes. Because of this, we are unable to provide specific details on training programs or employment opportunities for assistance dog trainers. However, we encourage individuals interested in this field to connect directly with our member organizations for more information on available training programs, job openings, or potential mentorship opportunities.

If you are looking for more details on how to become an assistance dog trainer, we recommend visiting the websites of our members, where you can learn about their specific requirements and application processes. Additionally, our member page provides direct contact details for each organization, making it easier to reach out for further inquiries. You can also explore current job listings from our members on our job page at Jobs – AADSA.

Volunteering with Assistance Dogs

Many of our members actively engage with volunteers and offer a wide variety of volunteering opportunities. These roles range from puppy foster carers and puppy socialisers, who play a crucial part in a puppy’s early development, to assisting with fundraising efforts, event coordination, and other essential activities that support their work. Volunteers are invaluable in helping these organisations achieve their goals and make a meaningful impact.

At AADSA, we do not directly offer volunteering opportunities, nor are we able to provide specific details about the roles available through our member organisations. However, if you are interested in volunteering, we encourage you to visit our member page. There, you will find information about each organisation, their mission, and the ways they involve volunteers. To learn more about available opportunities, we recommend visiting their websites or reaching out to them directly to discuss how you might get involved and contribute to their important work.

Student placements and work experience

Some of our members occasionally offer student placements or work experience opportunities. However, it’s important to note that AADSA does not directly provide these opportunities and is unable to offer specific guidance regarding what each of our members may be able to offer. As such, we cannot provide any personalized advice or details about potential placements or work experience roles available through our network.

If you’re interested in exploring these opportunities, the best course of action is to visit our member page. On this page, you’ll find a comprehensive list of the organizations we work with, along with details about each one. From there, you can visit their individual websites for more information about potential placements or work experience opportunities. Alternatively, we recommend contacting the organizations directly to inquire about any current or upcoming openings.
